For some reason I've been wanting to eat Bak Kut Teh for quite sometime now. I had cereal for breakfast today and I just decided that I'll take the stuff out from the freezer to make myself a wholesome pot of Bak Kut Teh since it was cool and rainy all day.
Ingredients:
1 pack of pre-packed Bak Kut Teh herbs
Handful of Goji Berries (Kei Chi)
6 bowls of water
2 garlic bulbs (skin peeled)
12 dried Shitake mushrooms (soaked and cut into halves)
A handful of tofu puffs
Seasoning:
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 teaspoon of dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
A few dashes of white pepper powder
Salt to taste
Condiment:
Soy Sauce
ABC dark Sweet Soy Sauce
Two Tablespoon of chopped fresh garlic
Method
Add in the water, garlic bulbs, pre-packed Bak Kut Teh herbs, pork ribs, mushrooms, tofu puffs and boils in low heat for about 1 - 2 hours. Add in the seasoning and boil for another 5 minutes. Serve hot.
Honestly my picture does no justice. It was steaming and I was starving so I was rushing to eat :P. I was surprise it tasted so good. I was leary about using my pre-pack Bak Kut Teh herbs because this one was really old. It was given to me by one of my friend before she left to go home. I've had it for more than 5 years and god knows how long she had it before but I am happy to say that it still taste so very good.
Oily Vegetables
Ingredients
Lettuce
Fried Onions (Shallots)/ chopped garlic
Method
Boil a pot of water and blanch lettuce. Pour fried shallots/garlic on top of the vegetable with about one tablespoon of oil.
P/s: I pour about half a bowl of oil in a bowl. I put chopped shallots/garlic in the bowl. Put in the bowl in microwave for about 4 minutes (depending on how many volt your microwave). Keep a close watch on your onions/garlic. Shallot takes a longer time to get crispy while garlic browns much quicker so after the 4 minutes nuke it 30-45 seconds each time but watch it closely so it doesn't burn. My shallot burned because I was not watching it.
I was preparing dinner so I didn't watch the onions so mine got burned a little. The next day I fried some chopped garlic in the microwave again so I used fried garlic on my vegetable the next day. I purposely fried extra garlic so that I could sprinkle some on my rice. I guess vampires was afraid of me since I was consuming all the garlic!LOL
I had Bak Kut Teh for dinner, brunch and dinner the next day and brunch again the follow day after. My Bak Kut Teh is all gone now..slurrppp....Hubby likes the soup but he didn't like the ribs.He suggested that I use pork roast next time when I make this!I'm just dumb-founded with his suggestions sometimes.I wonder whether will pork roast actually works?

Hahaha, so funny, i made BKT yesterday too. I was dying for some herbal soup and remembered the packet of BKT mixed which my friend gave me too about 2 years ago. Not too bad, but not enough kick! I didn't put in mushrooms coz i ran out and didn't feel like running out in the rain to get them. I never knew to put some oyster sauce. I have some left overs, so I might try that. Does your hubby eat BKT? Mine will run a 100 miles away if he sees/smells that!
My hubby ate some and he actually liked the soup but just not the ribs. He don't eat the mushroom he never likes our chinese dried mushroom. My hubby won't drink yuk chai soup though.
What you mean not enough kick?Chili? I ate with lots and lots of garlic too..LOL
What I meant was not enough herbal taste to the soup...like something is missing. My hubs very much likes chinese mushrooms, to my surprise. All kinds of mushrooms, even in the cans he will eat them. Yep, I put in a lot of garlic and i feel like i'm emitting garlic out from my skin. Oh I'm have the left over soup and ribs now with a some oyster sauce...yummy!!!
Maybe too much water or not enough seasoning..Glad to hear that the oyster sauce helped..LOL...My hubby said that Chinese Mushroom is chewy..Sometimes he'll eat it if he forgets that he don't like it or when is cut into small pieces..Does your hubs like seafood? Does he eat Sushi?
Yeah I think I put too much water. See la, inexperience! :)
I like seafood except for fish, especially steamed fish, fish porridge. If I have fish, it has to be deep fried and lots of chilies - pretty much to cover up the fishy smell. Hubby likes fish but certain types of fish. Walleye is his favorite. Do you get walleye in TX? Frozen i suppose. So, needless to say, we are not a fan of sushi. Not gungho about japanese food either. But for me, I don't mind their noodles coz I'm a noodle freak. I can have noodles, any type, every day.
Ahh..you are not a big fan of seafood huh??I love fish..Steam or grill..I like fry too but not too much..my hubby don't really eat steam fish coz I think is too fishy..I just steam and makan my own fish that's all..I love Japanese food but hubby obviously not so not nice eat with him coz he waste money only! I love noodles too I can eat noodles everyday sometimes two meals a day too..I love noodles more than rice too...Walleye? I'm not sure but there is a lot of tilipia here though..I don't really know the different fish too much and it all taste the same to me actually!:P
My hubby also cannot tahan steam fish. He said the smell of the fish too strong. Since I came here 12 years ago I tend to eat a lot of rice too. I think coz hubby likes rice over noodles. But if he eats rice, I sometimes have noodles instead. Asian will always be an asian.
My husband cannot tahan see me makan my fish because I suck on the eyes and he's surprise to see me makan the fish with the skin..you know here they only eat fish fillet and nothing else. My hubby don't really care for rice because he say that rice is tasteless! He likes to makan rice like hamburger helper. So I try and stir fry some rice (like fried rice) for him so that there is some "taste" when we makan rice!
you're a good cook!! I can see from the BKT U cooked!!! wau ..lau atleast your hubby still eat BKT!! mine just smell the herbs when brewing lari kuat kuat!! said yikes! hahaha!! now you remind me to cook BKT again coz it's cold now!
Lesley I'm still learning to cook..The weather was chilly last week too that's why I decided to cook some BKT..I was surprise my hubby tried this too. I'm sure is chilly where you are too..stay warm..:)
